The fascination
of bird flight photography is
inevitably the sequel to normal
photography of birds for many
wildlife photographers. The technical
barrier is however always there
and not only expertise but willpower
are important if any success is
to be achieved. While film-type
photography still achieves a better
quality of image especially with
the slower films, photographic
methods using high-speed flash
are essential.
But even high-speed
flash has its own disadvantages
in that the light required must
overcome the available daylight
as birds will normally only fly
in daylight.With no commercial
high-speed flash powerful enough
for the job, Tony Tilford resorted
to building his own. With the
essential automatic detection
and triggering systems in place,
pictures of birds in flight were
made possible.
